徒手技术与冷兵技术相比较，徒手技术要比冷兵技术复杂得多。然而，在传统的十八般武艺当中，徒手技术却排在了最末，那是因为刀棍要比拳脚的杀伤力大，而且古时军方作战多以车马战为主，所以古人不太重视徒手技术。如果不是乘车骑马作战的话，徒手技术应该是冷兵技术的基础，这在近代的功夫体系当中表现得尤为明显，近代的各门派功夫多以徒手技术为主，以冷兵技术为辅。也就是说，掌握好徒手技术就能够比较容易地掌握冷兵技术。
在法制社会和平年代里，由于官方不允许普通百姓平时携带管制刀具，所以空拳没有指定的冷兵武器，但是我可以向大家推荐一种目前官方允许携带的防身武器——甩棍。甩棍又叫“伸缩棍”，一般由三节钢管组成，携带方便而且使用简便。甩棍平时无须练习，只要你掌握了空拳的徒手技术也就掌握了甩棍的实战技术。需要说明的是：用甩棍抗暴时只要你不打击敌方的头部就不容易出人命。比较而言，甩棍算是目前比较实际的防身武器。
