多年以前，国外的一些格斗专家就曾提出过“练习格斗不要进行力量训练”的观点，因为经常进行力量训练会使你养成努劲的习惯，在格斗时很难打出能使对手受内伤的穿透力。练习穿透力不但不能进行力量训练，而且还要不断地调整心态，在格斗时不能有伤人之心和求胜的欲望，你一旦有伤人之心和求胜的欲望，你就会努劲，你一努劲就打不出穿透力，也就是老子的“无为而无不为”的观点。
以前的拳击教练也总是告诉拳手：不要进行力量训练，那会让你的四肢粗大，关节僵硬，在拳台上变成了活动的靶子。但是由于拳击是一项竞技运动，拳手无法克服求胜的欲望，在拳台上很难打出穿透力，表现的主要是蛮劲、僵劲。由于拳手在拳台上很难打出穿透力，也就没谁能相信“不要进行力量训练”的观点，就是教练上了拳台也很难克服求胜欲，因为拳击这项运动的本身就是竞技，它和防身抗暴是两种不同性质的行为。
截拳道创始人李小龙的心态是：“我宁愿被打死也不能输给人家！”由于强烈的求胜欲导致了他在格斗时无法打出穿透力，对自己拳脚的杀伤力越来越不自信，经常随身携带刀子出入。当他真正与人发生冲突时，他会掏出刀子来解决问题，而不是靠拳脚。由于他对自己拳脚的杀伤力总是感到力不从心，以至于拼命地进行力量训练，甚至采用给肌肉通电的方式来增强力量。
